First experiences with my Posterous at http://scobleizer.posterous.com/

Some first time problems upon trying Posterous:

1. Autoposting has me torn. I'm now investing a lot of time in Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed. I far prefer people to hand post things made for the specific audiences that show up there. Plus, it's very easy to get duplicates. I already send my stuff from FriendFeed to Twitter, and that caused dupes on my first try here. Sometimes not easy for a beginner to figure out.

2. I tried a video from Blip.tv and it came in black. I was using the bookmarklet. I must have screwed something up, but since it says it supports Blip, I thought it would work and it didn't. So that needs more QA work.

Some good things?

Most everything here is very slick. Feels better than Wordpress.com in a lot of areas and I can see that this will be a powerful place for me to kick off certain kinds of conversations.

I must admit, I don't like popularity based lists of suggestions. I wish we could come up with something better. Maybe something that looks like alltop.com?

Anyway, the one feature that Steve Rubel told me about is when I want to post a long Tweet from SimplyTweet, my iPhone app that I use to Tweet from, it will automatically send to Posterous if it's too long. I'll try that tomorrow. In the meantime, this is very nice.

Oh, and one other disclaimer: I see that this is running on the Rackspace Cloud. That makes my heart warm!

:-)

I really want to bring my videos into here. I think this could be a great place to have a video channel.

Best advice I can give you Robert is to really work out how to best use Posterous to push to other services you are active on (go to Manage > Autopost to Everywhere > Add a Service).

I would suggest you consider Twitter, Facebook, Vimeo, Flickr & Wordpress (i.e. content 'hosting' networks) but possibly not FriendFeed or Tumblr (lifestreaming networks) as you could create a bit of an annoying feedback loop.

Again, really glad to see you join Posterous. I agree totally with Steve Rubel's comments - this is a blogging platform particularly well suited to the new blogging / lifestreaming hybrid that seems to be emerging.

Posting videos directly from your iPhone to Posterous works very well. You can use our iPhone app, or just email them in. We transcode and host, and they even play in mobile safari.

For video from my 5D M2, I post it to Vimeo since they do HD so well. And then put just a link into Posterous and let the system auto embed the flash player.

"Favorite this" feature could be a great meassure of popularity. And also a great way to suggest what to explore.

The cross posting is both brilliant and a pain sometimes. I have found my personal blog is now a duplicate of my posterous ;)

Get your own domain, and regularly back up your feed - then if you stop using posterous at least you will not lose your content and backlinks.

Hi Robert, works for me with Blip.tv although you may want to adjust size in the html edit. Otherwise as long as the videos aren't too big for email which in your case they are probably are.. but you can just email the mp4 or drop the youtube link into the email and it does the rest.

Using it as a video/photos channel is awesome. I also use it to embed some interesting Friendfeed threads, like this one http://niron.posterous.com/whats-your-favorite-beer .

David - I'm hoping that the recent acquisition of Slinkset (http://slinkset.com/) - a Digg style post / news aggregation service could see more advanced favorite this / voting features introduced to Posterous.

Sachin - care to comment?

Yeh well I don't think Posterous can substitute Tubemogul as a video distributor, because your files are way to big for email I imagine. For everything else I think it's a great hub.

Welcome Robert to Posterous! I set-up my site a little over a week ago and have been loving every minute. Being able to compose your post and send directly from email makes this a dead simple way to get your content out. What I normally do is first post to my Posterous site before posting to any of my other services. That way, I can check for accuracy first before it hits Twitter, Facebook and my other platforms and make any corrections or changes if needed. I'm looking forward to reading your future posts.

The fact that I can blog on the go with my phone makes this better than any other platform.

For video that is too big to email, Posterous team should take a look at partnering up with an oneline file host like Jungle Disk, Livedrve or ZumoDrive. Livedrive has a feature to post photos directly to Facebook. A similar thing with video and Posterous would be really convenient.

@Brent: Sounds like a good idea. But then, the idea that Posterous is the only place to go to, for distributing your content is broken.
My guess is that they will make a posterous solution for that use case at some point, maybe it will be part of a posterous bizniz model.

Great to see you get started - finally :) One feature you should know about, that might come in handy. If you start sub-posterous sites from your account you have the option to protect the site with a password. Great feature if you're working on publishing projects for example and you wish to certain people to get teasers, sneak peaks or simply to judge your efforts before signing off on a commitment/deal. Best of luck with your Posterous-trials :) @janfriman | @inforganic |

I can't believe that you ran into problems here already. Posterous has one of the most elegant (and simplest) UI's around. Maybe it's too simple for you. The bookmarklet is one of my favorite features here. I actually like it more than friendfeed’s. Regardless, I'm sure you'll be pushing posterous to its limit's in no time. It seems like every service that you use befits from your presence in one way or another. I hope this one is no different!

Glad to see you on Posterous!
I don't use autopost on my Posterous because I need to edit and add links to the post, something that I cannot do when I use the bookmarklet. And I use it often. So after posting, I'll work on editing and then click autopost later on.

This is interesting, but I don't know how much I'll actually use it -- that remains to be seen.

Nice dude...welcome. The only danger of posterous is that it's a blog killer (and that's a good thing). I never post anywhere else anymore. Blogging RIP.

Rich...!

I'd like to point out that the focus of Posterous is easy posting of rich media by email. Scoble, you should definitely give that a try from your desktop or iPhone!

I like the select posting rather than the autopost. You can pick and choose where you crosspost by how you address an email submission. Enjoying it a lot. Has been great to post pics on the fly with the new iPhone app.

Thanks for the tip. I'm looking forward to giving this a try. I like the idea of one post going everywhere I need it to go.

Just tried this out and I think I'm going to switch over from Wordpress to this. It's low maintenance and once you figure out where to autopost what, it's straightforward. You're right, Wordpress better watch out.

Yes the Autopost is nice, if that is what you need, but this doesn't even come close to what Wordpress can do.

Good to see you here on Posterous too Scoble :) Let Posterous autopost to the other sites for you instead of Friendfeed. That was the solution for me. One of the best features on Posterous is that you can @reply to Twitter via comments. Another tip: use SimplyTweet as your iPhone Twitter app. It is very tightly integrated with Posterous. For example can you post tweets that is longer than 140 char to you Posterous blog with a link to it on Twitter automatically, post photos, & heck you can even use it to blog with directly!

Agree with previous comments. I really enjoyed moving from Wordpress to Posterous with lots of less features, but a strong core.

I too think Posterous is brilliant. I am using it at the moment to build an easily readable collection of interesting and relevant content that I have found in Google Reader - mainly through friends' shares - and on my travels round the web, that I can pass on to my colleagues in Higher Ed who are just beginning to discover 'social media' and may not have found such rich and diverse content for themselves yet. I have created two posterous-es (is that a word?) so that I can divide the content into a) of specific relevance to education and b) just generally interesting to me and maybe others. I might even find the time to write some blog posts myself!
